Walk into Mugshots Grill & Bar and you will be greeted by images of many patrons (and a few famous individuals) all over the walls of an upscale rustic décor befitting a southern favorite. It’s a comfortable atmosphere and server, Kristin Beach, was most gracious as I looked over the extensive menu. Ultimately, Kristin recommended the “Come-back Burger” and it did not disappoint.

Highlands Bar and Grill: A Birmingham Treasure

By Annie Tate

If you’re looking for a true elegant dining experience in the Birmingham area, Highlands Bar and Grill is certainly a top choice. The restaurant, located on Birmingham’s Southside, offers fine French-inspired, regional Southern cuisine and an ever-changing seasonal menu that virtually ensures each visit will be completely unique.

About Highlands Bar and Grill

Highlands Bar and Grill is the flagship restaurant of nationally recognized chef Frank Stitt, who grew up in Cullman, Alabama. Stitt opened Highlands in November of 1982. The restaurant was successful almost immediately, drawing crowds from the Birmingham area and beyond. Still went on to open Bottega Restaurant and Bottega Café and Chez Fonfon. He has trained some of Alabama’s most successful chefs, including Chris Hastings (Hot and Hot Fish Club), also a James Beard award winner.

Since Highlands Bar and Grill opened its doors, diners have come to mark special occasions, conduct business dinners or just drop by for a late evening supper in the inviting atmosphere of the main dining room or bar area.

Menu Offerings

The menu at Highlands Bar and Grill changes seasonally, offering fresh Southern fare with a French inspiration. On any given evening, diners might find themselves enjoying roast quail, a grilled zucchini summer salad or a crabmeat and heirloom tomato salad.

As Highlands says, “We love the ever-changing basket that each harvest allows, from the first springtime shad roe to the blue-green live and kickin' soft shell crabs that arrive a few weeks later. Summer's shell beans, tomatoes, okra and watermelon bring a smile. The cooler weather game of venison and quail, root vegetables and greens creates sustenance. Our dishes are prepared with respect and restraint to allow each ingredient's inherent goodness to shine through.”
