LAS VEGAS – The No. 4-ranked Alabama men's golf team carded one of the lowest scores during Tuesday’s second round of the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters, and will come into Wednesday’s final 18 holes just five strokes out of first place. The Crimson Tide finished the day with a 1-over par 289 and will enter the final round of play in sixth overall with a 36-hole total of 3-over par 579 (290-289).
Only four teams in the 15-team field fared better than Alabama’s team total on Tuesday, helping the Tide to remain in striking distance for its fourth team title in six tournaments played this season. Alabama trails clubhouse leader No. 36 TCU (574) by five strokes, while No. 5 Florida (575) and tournament-host No. 36 UNLV (575) are tied for second. Eighth-ranked Oklahoma (577) and No. 28 Pepperdine (577) are tied for fourth, two shots ahead of the Tide entering the final round of play.
Alabama is paced by three golfers who come into the third round of play ranked among the top-20 individuals in the field. Senior Jonathan Hardee is currently in a tie for 10th overall with a 1-under par 143. After opening with a 1-under par 71 on Monday, the Greer, S.C., native battled throughout Tuesday’s round to finish with an even par 72. After recording bogeys in three of his first seven holes to begin the day, Hardee’s final 11 holes included four birdies and a bogey.
Senior Lee Hodges also had a strong response after a tough start to his second round. After finishing the opening 18 holes in second place with a 4-under 68, Hodges began round two 5-over through his first three holes. However, he would settle down and shoot 1-under par over the final 15 holes to end the day in a tie for 12th overall with a 36-hole total of even par 144 (68-76).
Freshman Wilson Furr continues to play well in his first tournament of the spring season. He was the only Crimson Tide golfer to shoot below par on Tuesday, carding a 1-under 71, and is in a tie for 17th overall with a score of 1-over 145 (73-71).
Senior Davis Riley, who entered the event ranked No. 2 in the nation in Golfstat.com’s statistical rankings, is in a tie for 48th with a 36-hole total of 5-over par 149 (77-72). Freshman Davis Shore rounds out the Tide in 68th position with a 9-over par 153 (79-74) on the par 72, 7,374-yard Southern Highlands Golf Club course.
The 15-team Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters features nine teams ranked among in the top 30 in the nation and 13 ranked among the top 55, according to the latest Golfstat.com statistical rankings.
The Tide will tee off the third and final round on Wednesday morning at 9:50 a.m. PT and will be paired along with Oklahoma and Pepperdine. Live scoring for this year’s tournament can be found at www.Golfstat.com.
